President, Comisión Nacional de Bioética de México (National Bioethics Commission of Mexico)
Manuel H. Ruiz de Chavez has been the National Bioethics Commissioner of Mexico since 2009. He has assumed various positions at the highest levels of health institutions in the areas of public health, primary care, and health research in the national and international field. He is currently the official representative of Mexico at the Committee on Bioethics, Council of Europe, and UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee.
Dr. Ruiz de Chavez was one of the founders of the Health Initiative of the Americas, University of California, Berkeley, serving from 2008 to 2010 as a member of the Advisory Board. His commitment has focused on the strengthening of biomedical practice, and in recent years he has addressed the regulation of cannabis in the national context with regard to public health policy, human rights, and research ethics, emphasizing the importance of ensuring protection for vulnerable social groups. He holds a medical doctorate, a Master of Science degree, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
